About Southern Perry County, Ohio

Southern Perry County is located in the foothils of the Appalachian Mountains, approximately 65 miles southeast of Columbus,the state capital; and approximately 60 miles from the Ohio River.
The area is rich in history and natural beauty, having been a major coal producing region in the late 1800's and early 1900's and being located within the Wayne National Forest. Southern Perry County is part of the region known as Little Cities of Black Diamonds. For more information, click here.

Small towns and villages flourished during these boom years as workers from Europe were recruited to work in the mines. As the mining industry mechanized, these workers were forced to leave the area to find other employment. However, many chose to stay and commit to long commutes to work.

Southern Local School District boast one of the newest buildings in the district and a student teacher ration of 18.75, spending approximately $5,064.08 per student. Ohio University, a four-year state university, is just 24 miles to the south. Hocking Technical College, in Nelsonville, 15 minutes to the west.
